ALERT 2003-1
Fraud Awareness Alert
February 27, 2003
""
TO: All PBGC EMPLOYEES AND CONTRACTORS
""
Subject: WARNING - Credit Card Theft at PBGC
""
We are alerting you that a number of PBGC employees and contractors have had their credit cards stolen over the past two months. Many of the credit cards were stolen from purses that were in desk drawers in private offices. After the cards are stolen, they are immediately used within Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Thus, it is likely that someone who has access to PBGC office space is stealing the cards and passing them to others on the outside.

This is a crime of opportunity. We ask that you maintain the security of your purse and wallet, by either locking it up or keeping it on your person. Do not leave your wallet in a coat pocket, in your briefcase, or inside an unlocked cabinet or desk.
Let's all be careful and more security conscious. Please do not allow others to "tailgate" into your suite. If someone is in your office area that you do not recognize or appears to be wondering, please ask, "May I help you?" It's a polite question and, indeed, you may be able to assist the person in locating an office - or you might deter a crime.
If you have recently been the victim of credit card theft, please contact one of the OIG investigators, Special Agent Cornelia Green at x3315 or Special Agent Tom Zigan at x3104, or you may contact me at x3877.
